Rahul Panghal thrives in the challenging environment during his internship with Bharti Airtel

With around 1.2 billion subscribers, India has second largest number of telephone users in the world. The Telecommunications industry contributes to 6.5% of India’s GDP and Bharti Airtel is one of its leading players. Lately the industry has been in a state of flux with the big players wrangling for their piece of market share. It’s in these dynamic and interesting times that Rahul Panghal of NIIT University got the opportunity to intern with Bharti Airtel. The Graduate Engineer Trainee tells us about his Industry Practice experiences and how they are shaping him.
The BTech Electronics and Communications Engineering student was chosen by the big gun in the Telecommunications industry on the back of his resume. Rahul has since been interning in the Monitoring department of the company in Gurgaon. “I am working in two key sub departments. With the MPLS monitoring team, I have to control PAN India network including Peyto and MPLS devices. With the CEN network monitoring team, I have to control the traffic of Ciena, Huwaei and Nokia devices,” he informs matter-of-factly.
Though not a paid internship, Rahul claims that his Industry Practice is turning out to be a hugely enriching experience. For starters, he has learnt a lot about telecommunications networks, which are an integral part of our lives – their functioning, processes, and issues faced on the ground and how to overcome them. “There are moments when you have to think quickly on your feet to solve the problems. If a device or router goes down then you have to quickly figure out a solution so that none of the users are affected,” he explains through his own experiences.
Rahul tells us that the CIC representative of NIIT University had already provided him with information about the company and what to expect during the projects. So he felt prepared to handle the responsibilities but is learning a lot along the way. “The biggest realization for me was to know that the industry works completely differently than we think. My project is different from others because I am working on a live network. I have to solve problems immediately, and that’s the kind of challenge I was looking for to prove myself as a professional,” he concludes strongly.
