NIIT University Industry Practice 2020 Update

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I will remember. Involve me and I learn" —Benjamin Franklin
Recruiters across programs are increasingly seeking industry ready graduates who have skill sets that can be used in solving real life problems. While many universities emphasize excellence in theory, the practical angle is usually weak.
With its lineage, NIIT University inherited more than three decades of rich expertise and global know-how of the NIIT Group. This meant that the focus from day one was on filling this key gap of practical skills in undergraduate and postgraduate education. Practical elements, experiential learning opportunities, and internships are thus an integral part of all our programmes. Hence, for example, our B.Tech programmes have a 35 percent weightage towards practical learning opportunities. A key element of practical learning is the 6-month Industry Practice (IP), which carries 20 credits out of the total 178 credits in B.Tech courses. Under IP, students complete their last semester off-site at an industry location immersed in facing and solving real life issues utilizing the theory they have learned in their courses. This can involve either hands-on project work for companies or working with academic mentors to undertake research work that addresses key industry problems.
In 2020, NIIT University placed 210 students in IP stints. The partners for IP this year included marquee names such as IBM, Cognizant, EY, Airtel, Apollo Hospitals, Big Basket, Biocon, Coca Cola, Genpact and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs – Government of India, besides others. NIIT University has attracted a total of 788 unique IP partners till date across its programmes. This year saw 37 repeat partners from last year, which is a testament to the value addition that NIIT University students provide in their IP stints. Additionally, the University has managed to on board 83 new partners despite challenging economic conditions.
The students are suitably compensated for their work by our partners. This year, the highest stipend offered was INR 87,000 pm (Domestic) and INR 71,405 pm (International).
In their selection process, IP partners look for leadership potential, communication skills, technical skills, and the right attitude amongst applicants. These key skill sets are the basis for eventual recruitment as well and the IP selection process offers an excellent preparation ground to students for final placements.
One of the reasons why NIIT University attracts repeat recruiters and IP partners is that these skill sets are found across our batches. Students are prepared thoroughly and systematically for selection through a research-driven curriculum, significant customization possibilities in the curriculum, a Design My Future module that ensure preparedness from day 1, the Professional Life Skills (PLS) classes that help imbibe skillsets critical to corporate success, and Way 2 Connect sessions wherein alumni mentor current batch students. These alumni bring with them both motivation to help their juniors as well as rich experience working with stellar companies such as Big Basket, HSBC, Genpact, IBM, PwC, Infosys, Sapient, Zomato, and Cognizant, to name a few.
These factors offer our students some unique advantages in their selection. Repeated feedback from recruiters has indicated that NIIT University students carry an extremely positive attitude alongside an openness and discipline towards learning. Besides this, students learn to be productive from day one in their chosen fields as opportunities for learning abound. Added to this, the all-round development opportunities in campus make them complete professionals as they maneuver campus life.
More importantly, the IP stint timed just before final placement provides students with the right edge for their careers, making them an excellent fit for a broad range of roles.
