Curious to learn and determined to grow, alumnus Yash Sangai builds on the NU platform to scale new heights of career success
When you have belief in your abilities, you feel confident to make the right career moves at the right time and find your way to the top. NIIT University alumnus Yash Sangai reveals that he found his self-belief in the strong foundation and leadership abilities he built during the course of his BTech programme at NU. The BTech CSE Class of 2019 student has worked with several top industry names in a short span of time and is now the Senior Software Engineer with Paytm, the digital payments powerhouse in India. He recounts the early steps that have paved his way to the top.
With its cutting-edge & industry-oriented curriculum, extensive resources and well thought out pedagogic initiatives that have found their place in NEP 2020 (National Education Policy 2020), NU helped Yash build a strong platform for himself in his chosen field. He believes that foundation in programming and hands-on experience in software development have been instrumental in this career success. “I have to thank my highly knowledgeable faculty members, who helped me imbibe the skills through invaluable practice. I got firsthand experience of software design and development methodologies, which has stood me in good stead,” he asserts.
Besides building his technical skills, Yash also worked on his leadership abilities by making the most of the platforms that were offered to him. He talks about the various opportunities he found on campus as he recounts, “I was part of first siNUsoid – a university event, as a core member, which was a brilliant platform for me to work on open-source projects, events, and collaborate with peers. It helped me build critical professional life skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.” The next step was to put those skills into practice in the real world.
NIIT University’s robust network of top-notch organisations came handy as Yash found the opportunity to showcase his skills with the Industry Practice at BigBasket. “Working with the renowned online retail brand was just the kind of real-world experience I was looking for to enter the workforce. It helped me a lot and allowed me to work with different technologies to identify my interests. I pursued them further and eventually also got promoted because of my performance,” he talks about that exhilarating stage in his career.
But it was just the beginning for Yash, who moved on to another pioneer in the digital space. He joined Unacademy, the leading learning platform in India, where his leadership qualities were called upon as he helmed a team of four junior engineers. “It was a big responsibility but I felt prepared with the experiences I had until then. It was a career role where I got to work on several iconic projects, helped the organization grow its retention rate, revenue numbers, and also save some tech-related costs,” he states.
After consistently proving himself and spending 3.5 years in Ecommerce and Ed-Tech, Yash decided to explore new spheres and set of technologies. Earlier this year he began working as a Senior Software Engineer with Paytm, because according to him, they have an ocean of opportunities to explore. “I got this curiosity for learning and to keep growing during my time at NU. With the foundation the university has built for me, I am confident that I will keep going on this path successfully in the future,” he concludes on a note that we agree on too.
