Invited talk on Mentoring for NU faculty by Prof Daya Pant former NCERT HOD

NIIT University had the pleasure of having an esteemed guest, Prof Daya Pant, retired Head of Department of Educational Psychology and Foundations of Education at National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), Delhi. For over 45 years, she has been extensively involved in research, training, development and extension work in the areas of guidance, counselling, and peace education. Prof Pant delivered an interactive talk on ‘Mentoring and Ways to Facilitate Interactions among Students’.

Prof Pant left several key messages for NU faculty. Mentoring students is not a one-time interaction—it is a continuous, evolving process that plays a vital role in the overall development of the student. Unlike a formal instructional method, mentoring is more personal and relational. It goes beyond academic guidance, aiming to shape the personal, emotional, social, and even moral aspects of a student’s growth.

At the heart of mentoring lies trust and transparency. A mentor is someone who creates a safe, non-judgmental space for a student to express thoughts, fears, and aspirations. The goal is not to dictate choices but to listen actively, ask the right questions, and gently guide students toward discovering their own path. Mentoring involves supporting students in making their own decisions, encouraging independence and self-awareness rather than dependence.

About Prof Daya Pant

Prof Daya Pant was faculty of NCERT for 35 years, and involved in research, training, development and extension work in areas of guidance, counselling, and peace education. She has also co-authored a book on value education, published by NCERT. She has more than four decades of experience in counselling children and adults, while she is also an expert in training counsellors and teachers. Her research interests include guidance needs of adolescents, values education, gender role and indigenous/ systems approach to guidance.
