NU observes Martyrs’ Day 2023
Time: Morning and Evening
Venue: Meeting Room 301
Martyrs’ Day or Shaheed Diwas is observed on 30th January every year to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary. The day also honors all freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country.
On this day, the country as a whole revisits the values that Mahatma Gandhi or the ‘Father of the Nation’ as he was reverentially addressed, stood for and practiced all his life. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, lovingly called ‘Bapuji’ believed in the power of non-violence (ahimsa),fight for truth (satyagraha) and self-governance (swaraj). He led major movements against British rule through a non-violent approach. His death anniversary is observed as Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs’ Day.
NU conducted an online Quiz in the morning on Bapuji. The evening was devoted to deliberations on Gandhiji’s principles and message. The following actions were suggested.

1. Revisit India’s struggle for independence
India’s struggle for independence lasted for 100 years. It started in the year 1857 when the first resistance against the British Raj was registered in the eastern provinces of the country.
2. Honor the great martyr
The best way of paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi is by propagating his key principles of non-violence, truth, and harmony and sharing his message with the people we know using digital media including social media.
3. Condemn violent extremism
On Martyrs’ Day we pledge to take steps to eradicate the roots of violence from our community.
